'Red, Hot and Blue' and more |
In two concerts, the Asheville Symphony Orchestra will treat audiences at home and in Brevard to its "Red, Hot and Blue" concert with works by Gershwin, Handel and Shostakovich this weekend.
The Asheville Symphony will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in downtown Asheville and at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Center at Brevard College.
Directed by conductor Daniel Meyer, "Red Hot and Blue" will include Handel's "Overture to the Royal Fireworks," Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 and George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," featuring Juilliard Competition winner Di Wu on piano.
Now, in his fifth season as music director of the Asheville Symphony, Meyer is recognized as one of the top young conductors of his generation.
"Rhapsody in Blue" was conceived as "a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America -- of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our blues, of our metropolitan madness," Gershwin said. He composed the rhapsody at a furious pace -- in about three weeks. It begins with a languid clarinet solo and includes a wonderful solo piano part, which will be played by Chinese-born Wu.
Wu made her professional debut at age 14 with the Beijing Philharmonic and has toured widely in Asia, Europe and the United States. She has appeared with Washington's National Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and twice in Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. She has studied at the Manhattan School of Music with Zenon Fishbein, the Curtis Institute and earned a Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School. |
